Saying we don't need old, classic construction materials and ideas because we have trendy, new ones, is like saying we don't need teeth because we have soft fast food and plastic knives; in both modern cases we result in poor outcomes, unattractive forms, and toxic refuse. Rome was not built in a day, but it is still there - functional, durable, attractive, and some was reused and not in landfills.
